State College is by far the most populated area in Centre County. With a population of over 79,400 State College is a part of the Centre Region, which is comprised of the Borough of State College and the five surrounding townships: Patton, Ferguson, College, Harris and Halfmoon. The Centre Region is considered to be a SMSA (Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area). The large population is due to Penn State University (designated University Park), which lies in the heart of State College. Not only is State College a vibrant community, it is surrounded by state game lands, forests and numerous productive farms. State College also attracts many different businesses drawn by easy access to routes 322 and 220 (future I-99). State College also offers recreation of many types from golfing to horse back riding. You can also catch a Penn State football game at Beaver Stadium or attend one of the many concerts offered at the Bryce Jordan Center or Eisenhower Auditorium on the Penn State campus. The Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts attracts thousands of visitors in July of each year. State College is also home to the Nittany Mall which offers over 68 stores and restaurants.
